With a songbook encompassing nearly 600! songs, The Grateful Dead may have debuted more songs in concert than any other band. Infrequently, this song debut also opened that show. This special, which I've been sitting on for years until the time was ripe (pun intended), celebrates these rarities.
When I learned that our Fall Membership Drive would use the theme of "Fresh Off the Vine" I knew this was the time. This phrase indicates something new and a song debut obviously presents a new thing; the first song in a concert also births a new thing. Taking this concept even further (luckily), some of my offerings in this broadcast feature the first Grateful Dead concert of the year in which it occurred. How's that for nested layers?
The songs included will span almost the full scope of the band's career (1968-1995), touching every decade. This broadcast will also feature songs played anywhere from just once to hundreds of times, electric (duh) and acoustic versions, classic favorites to tunes you might say 'huh?' to.
And all of this is only possible because KBOO Community Radio exists, offering hosts this sort of creative freedom.
