Covid, Unrest and Tragedy in South Africa: Desiree Hellegers speaks with Kendall, street/movement photographer, professor, and organizer with Portland Buddhist Peace Fellowship, about the life and death of her daughter Palesa Clementina Mofana Kendall Mofokeng– of Covid– amid riots in South Africa, spurred in part by the jailing of former President Jacob Zuma, but more broadly by widespread desperation, hunger and inequality amid the Covid lockdown. Desiree also honors the memory of 30-year-old anti-apartheid freedom fighter Steven Biko, who was tortured to death in South Africa on September 12, 1977.
Build Back Better: Bill Resnick speaks with Kirin Kennedy, the Deputy Director of Legislative and Administrative Advocacy at the Sierra Club. Bill and Kirin discuss Biden’s early environmental initiatives and budget proposals, including the $3.5 Trillion Build Back Better bill. Immediately following Bill’s interview, he’ll be back to address the critical question of global warming. Biden may well be leaning toward funding the program of the Investor Owned Utilities and rejecting the decentralized system of the Green New Deal. This would be a world historic tragedy because the IOU program will surely fail while the GND has some chance of success.
Assault on Abortion: On September 1st the Supreme Court declined to block one of the country’s most restrictive abortion laws, a Texas state statute that bans the procedure as early as six weeks into pregnancy and which allows civil suits against anyone assisting women seeking abortions. In this episode of the Left and the Law, Jan Haaken and Mike Snedecker discuss the horrific new law and political landscape for fighting these aggressive assaults on women and reproductive freedoms.
