Transforming Justice 2022
Karen James speaks with Julianne Jackson and Talia Gad with Partnership for Safety and Justice. PSJ is a member of The Transforming Justice Coalition along with Oregonians impacted by violence and the criminal justice system. The Coalition introduced SB1510, the Transforming Justice bill in the 2022 Oregon legislative session. SB1510 will:
- Reduce racial disparities in traffic stops by making a single headlight, tail light, or brake light a “secondary offense,” meaning that an officer can issue a citation only if a driver is pulled over for something else
- Improve success for people on probation and parole with a rule-making process that can prevent parole and probation officers from visiting the people they supervise at work. The rules will also cover when certain people on supervision can report remotely
- Address racial disparities in the criminal justice system, promote racial equity, and reduce prison use by creating the Justice Reinvestment Equity Program
