Kat Alioshin is a film director and producer who's helped shepherd numerous stop-motion animated classics to the big screen, including The Nightmare Before Christmas, The Corpse Bride, Coraline, and James and the Giant Peach.
Now she's turned for inspiration to the long-running Spike and Mike Festival of Animation and its co-founder Craig "Spike" Decker. Starting in 1977, the Spike and Mike Festival (and its counterpart the Sick and Twisted Festival) revolutionized how animated films are exhibited and promoted, and made household names of such artists as Andrew Stanton, Allison Snowden, Don Hertzfeldt, Joan Gratz, Craig McCracken, and Mike Judge.
Kat and Spike join S.W. Conser to talk about the resulting documentary film Animation Outlaws, and the surreal adventures that unfolded both on the screen and behind the scenes.
