In recent years scientists have discovered that methane gas is 85 times more potent than carbon dioxide at trapping heat in the atmosphere. Yet the so-called natural gas industry (a euphemistic term for methane) has doubled down on promoting its product as a bridge fuel to a renewable future. Even worse companies like NW Natural and Puget Sound Energy are now touting new false solutions such as renewable natural gas and clean hydrogen as carbon neutral alternatives. While promulgating these deceptions lobbyists for the gas utilities are working overtime to convince state and local governments that fracked gas should be exempt from climate regulations to eliminate fossil fuel usage.
On this episode of Locus Focus we talk with Nick Caleb, Staff Attorney at Breach Collective, about just how evil these companies really are.
Nick Caleb serves as a Staff Attorney at Breach Collective, providing legal and strategic support to grassroots partners around the country. He joins Breach with significant experience in climate, energy, and air quality law and policy. He has an unique knowledge of municipal level strategies for restricting the activities of the fossil fuel industry, having been deeply involved in efforts to prohibit fossil fuel infrastructure in Portland and throughout the Pacific Northwest. Before joining Breach, Nick served as the staff attorney at the Center for Sustainable Economy and environmental policy staffer for Portland City Commissioner Chloe Eudaly. While at the City of Portland, Nick stewarded the framework for Portland's 100% renewable energy policy, one of the most ambitious and comprehensive in the United States.
