Comics artist Derek Ballard helps celebrate 20 years of Words and Pictures
Author, cartoonist, and storyboard artist Derek Ballard has worked on the television shows Adventure Time and Midnight Gospel. He's also put in his time as a construction worker, single dad, and all-around working-class hero.
Derek's comic stories have been collected in the anthology Cartoonshow, which inspired Adventure Time creator Pendleton Ward to say, “I laughed and cried. Y’all, these are the real f***ing journal comics. Drawings that could slay a dragon. Every punchline a funny knife in your eye.”
S.W. Conser sits down with Derek to talk about cartooning, teaching, parenting, and cutting through bureaucracy in the Kafkaesque landscape that is the state of Florida.
