In this extended conversation with Film Noir Foundation Founder Eddie Muller, we spend an extra 20 minutes finding out about the importance of gritty urban stories in American culture and the race to rescue overlooked films from the landfill.
Eddie Muller is a film preservationist, a festival programmer, a San Francisco Literary Laureate, and the host of Noir Alley on the Turner Classic Movies channel. Eddie has been bringing the Noir City Film Festival to Portland's Hollywood Theatre for years now, and talks with S.W. Conser about neo-noir movies, femmes fatale, queer undercurrents in cinema, the influence of French critics, adventures in South American archives, film restoration, and clearing legal rights with studio executives.
