Please join us for Transpositive on KBOO Community Radio on Tuesday, January 21st as we talk with Marisa Richmond, a transgender icon and activist who has been working tirelessly for three decades to fight for transgender rights in Tennessee and nationally. This week begins part 1 of a 3-part series on Skrmetti, the landmark supreme court case argued in December which will begin the long process of establishing a historical record of gender identity as a category of identity subject to constitutional protections. Skrmetti, which originated in Tennessee, deals with three transgender youth challenging the state of Tennessee over a law that denies them access to gender-affirming care. Their case, which their parents filed on behalf of the children, was picked up by the ACLU and made its way to the Supreme Court where arguments were heard and a final decision is pending from the court.
Our guest, Marisa Richmond is a retired professor of history at MTSU and lives in the Nashville area. She has served as a delegate to the DNC on at least four occasions and has founded or served on numerous transgender and human rights organizations in Tennessee and nationally. Richmond filed an amicus brief to the court on Skrmetti and we will be discussing the conditions of transgender kids in Tennessee. Today's show is part one of a three-part series on Skrmetti on Transpositive. In two weeks we will be talking with an Oregon lawyer about how transgender folks in Oregon can begin to prepare for the likely negative effects to come out of the Skrmetti decision and for our final show we will be talking with members of the Transpositive collective about the case.
At a time when our world is on fire, this show is airing a day after the inauguration of a convicted criminal who has specifically targeted transgender people, there are many topics we can and should be covering. We will get to as much as we can with our limited resources as a community-produced radio show. We would encourage you to read Erin In the Morning hosted by transgender journalist Erin Reed for the most up-to-date information on what is happening in this ever-changing landscape of transgender news and if you are looking for resources for support we would encourage you to start with the Transgender Legal survival guide which can be found in the show notes.
