Agencies Dispute McKenzie River Mercury Contamination
The state Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is considering adding the McKenzie River, which supplies water to the city of Eugene, to a list of mercury-contaminated waters it will submit to the EPA. The Eugene Water and Electric Board (EWEB) is disputing the DEQ's methodology and standards. KBOO's Sam Bouman spoke to Karla Urbanowicz of the DEQ's water quality assessment program for more on mercury standards and what they could mean for the future of the McKenzie--long considered one of the state's most pristine rivers--and those who rely on its water and wildlife.
