As next Tuesday’s election approaches, a number of ballot measure races in Oregon look like they’re going to be very close.
One of the more contested initiatives, Measure 92, would require labeling of foods with genetically engineered ingredients.
It’s gotten added media attention because of large financial contributions from chemical and agricultural corporations, making it the most expensive initiative campaign in Oregon history.
The measure has also gotten mixed endorsements in the media.
The KBOO station Board of Directors recently approved an endorsement of measure 92.
most talk show hosts who have discussed the issue have come out in favor of labelling and “Yes on 92” signs are prominently displayed in KBOO’s front windows.
But The Oregonian has come out against it, as did Willamette Week and the Portland Mercury, while The Skanner newspaper supports the measure.
Earlier today, KBOO’s Paul Roland spoke with The Mercury’s News Editor Dennis Theriault, who addressed the question of why he decided to oppose measure 92 on behalf of the Mercury:
KBOO also spoke with Julia Degraw of the Oregon Right to Know campaign, the promoter of “Yes on 92,” to get their comments on the local newspapers’ decisions to oppose the measure.
