Actions taking place in Pacific Northwest to confront climate crisis

This graph from the World Meteorological Association shows the last 3 decades were the hottest on record--each hotter than the last. Our fossil fuel addiction could fry us. Meanwhile big coal, oil and gas have plans to transform the Pacific Northwest into a fossil fuel corridor with over 15 export terminals proposed. Will we embrace policies that continue to turn up the heat? Or join efforts to combat climate change? Tune in to hear about local efforts to help keep us cool. David Osborn will discuss fossil fuel exports in the PNW and the Columbia River Climate ActionThis action is sponsored by Summer Heat NW and Rising Tide and takes place Saturday, July 27, as part of the nation-wide 350.org Summer Heat actions. Tori Cole will cover the push to get Oregon to divest from fossil fuels; and Bonnie McKinlay will talk about the NO KXL Pledge of Resistance where NW activists have joined a national effort to halt construction of the Keystone XL pipeline which would transport Alberta's tar sands oil to the Gulf Coast. Hosted by Stephanie Potter.

David Osborne is an instructor at Portland State University and has been involved in a wide variety of social movements. He is a participant in the climate justice movement with Portland Rising Tide and was deeply involved in Occupy Portland.

Tori Cole is a climate justice activist and organizer with 350 PDX's campus divestment team. She is entering her second year studying environmental law at Lewis and Clark law school.

Bonnie McKinlay works on climate issues with Power Past Coal, Rising Tide, Greenpeace, 350PDX, and the Sierra Club.

Wednesday (7/24), 6:30 to 8:30 PM. A meeting for people interested in volunteering to help make this event a huge success. Laughing Horse Books (12 NE 10th Ave, Portland). Contact summerheat@portlandrisingtide.org for more info about volunteering.

Saturday (7/27)Summer Heat: Columbia River Climate Action. 10 AM to 4 PM. West of 100 Columbia Street, Vancouver, WA. 10:00 AM - 12:30 PM Workshops, 12:30 - 1:30 PM Speakers and 1:30 PM Action!  Folks from throughout the Northwest will come together joining national Summer Heat actions for a fun and family friendly action and combine fights to stop energy extraction, infrastructure and export. We wanna demonstrate what it'll look like if fossil fuel corporations try to imperil the climate by moving fossil fuels down the Columbia. Sign up and register to attend - joinsummerheat.org/pdx/ - ideally with a kayak though we need you on the land as well! (Don't have a boat? Thanks to our friends at Alder Creek and NRG kayaks we have about forty kayaks available. They'll be free to use, though if you can make a donation we'd appreciate it. If you wanna reserve a kayak in advance please RSVP to boats@portlandrisingtide.org.)
