Gov. Jan Brewer's veto of an Arizona bill is the death knell for legal religious discrimination.
Last week, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer vetoed a bill that would essentially have given business owners the right to, among other things, discriminate against LGBTQ people by refusing them service on religious grounds. Similar bills in Ohio and Mississippi were scrapped in the wake of the Arizona veto. And if you recall, American Catholics -- or at least the Church -- bristled at Obamacare's requirement that health plans must provide contraception free of charge.
This is not the kind of religious liberty the Founders envisioned -- they called for the right of people to worship as they pleased, not the right of churches to impose their dogma upon others. Fortunately, the swift and furious outcry against the Arizona bill, along with the unprecedented swing of public opinion in favor of gay marriage, may indicate that it's no longer acceptable to be a religious bigot in the United States.
