Katherine Dunn was the co originator of Gremlin Time back in 1978, and it was very sad to hear of her recent passing So we will present some of her best readings through the next months. First up is one of our earliest presentations, "To Build A Fire" by Jack London. You may have read this story of a man trying to survive in the Yukon, back in high school. But, there is a lot you may not remember about it. When we recorded this, I was practically mixing records in in the background to Katherine's reading. Featured in this story are excerpts from Wendy Carlos' Sonic Seasonings album, Keith Jarrett's Koln Concert, and even a sampling of Holst's The Planets. But it is Katherine's reading that makes this an outstanding reading.
Was going to also present a story about a man trapped on an island with hungry cats, But, didn't have enough time. So, continuing with the dog theme of the London story we present James Thurber's "The Dog Who Bit People". Both stories showcase Katherine's amazing range and ability to bring out the key dramatic elements of a story weightier it is a comedy or a tragedy.
There is the end of the previous poetry show at the start and a couple of messages, the show starts at -58:23 or so.
