We’ll be previewing two very special concerts on today’s News In Depth. The first features the World Premiere of Jessica Meyer’s Because I Will Not Despair and the West Coast Premiere of Kareem Roustom’s Hurry to the Light, performed by In Mulieribus, Portland’s acclaimed female vocal ensemble, and Camerata PYP, Portland Youth Philharmonic’s chamber orchestra. The second concert is PYP’s season-closer. They’ll be performing Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony for the first time in the orchestra’s 99 year history.
Our guests in the first segment are Anna Song, Artistic Director of In Mulieribus, composer Jessica Meyer, poet Alicia Jo Rabins, and composer Kareem Roustom. In the second segment, we welcome PYP’s Musical Director and Conductor David Hattner.
There will be three Because I Will Not Despair performances -- this Friday May 5th at Willamette University in Salem, Friday May 12th at Saint Philip Neri Church in SE Portland, and Saturday May 13th at Lewis and Clark College in SW Portland. The PYP season-closing performance of Beethoven's Ninth takes place this Sunday May 7th at Portland's Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall.
